Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
Totally agree with the ban. Its state wide in NY and it working just fine. You wouldn't allow people to smoke marijuana in bars, and that has no scientific proof that its detrimental, but ciggarettes on the other hand do cause health issues. As a bartender, and a NON-SMOKER, I've always hated having people sit at the bar and blow smoke in my face while I'm standing around or cleaning glasses, it's not hard to walk outside and kill yourself slowly, but its not right to subject others to it. Be thankful there is usually nice weather outside, think of the people in NY who have to go outside when its -10 outside, (which by the way right now, would be warm considering our cold snap up here.)
Its doubtful that it would hinder business around here... |

Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
Most Smoke Free Metro Areas from US News and World Report
#4 Brownsville, TX 88.2% non smoking rate http://www.smokefreemecklenburg.com/...inResponse.pdf Only 22% of Texans smoke. Others states range from 13 to 30 percent. The large number of winter Texan visitors quit smoking long ago. So if 4 out of 5 island visitors are non smokers, a local no smoking ordinance would be good for business. The Texas no smoking bill has been watered down in the House, and will now go to the Senate. Only 15 states do not have a public smoking ban. |

Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
The bill for a Statewide smoking ban is dead for this year, but the following article did my heart good:
"A Federal appeals court on Friday largely agreed with a landmark ruling that found cigarette makers deceived the public for decades about the heath hazards of smoking. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington upheld the major elements of a 2006 ruling that found the nation's top tobacco companies guilty of fraud and violating racketeering laws." The article showed a woman standing outside building smoking a cigarette. I've always thought that a woman with a cigarette in her mouth loses every ounce of sex appeal, I don't care if she's a beauty queen. |

Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
I can't understand why one of our aldermen haven't proposed a smoking ban. We are now surrounded by cities with bans and we're suppose to promote the island as healthy place to live and play.

Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
Do you know we now have in place an ordinance that prohibits smoking in all Town owned facilities. Let's ammend this to include all public buildings. It's the right thing to do.

Because they are afraid of the free spirits who live here. To heck with our health, with the long term positive effect on business, just don't offend those free spiirts.
If you think there should be a smoking ban, call or e-mail the aldermen like everything else. If they don't know there are a bunch of people who favor it, they will not take on something so controversial. |

Re: Texas statewide smoking ban
I've always suspected this even in "the day". Smoke is smoke is smoke.
"Calif. Regulators Find Pot Smoke Causes Cancer June 20, 2009 - 5:21 AM The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Marijuana smoke has joined tobacco smoke and hundreds of other chemicals on a list of substances California regulators say cause cancer. The ruling Friday by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment likely will force pot shops with 10 or more employees to post warnings. Final guidelines are expected by the time warning requirements take effect in a year. The listing only applies to marijuana smoke, not the plant itself. Spokesman Sam Delson says the state agency found marijuana smoke contains 33 of the same harmful chemicals as tobacco smoke. Delson says the findings came from a review of more than 30 scientific papers. Marijuana is illegal in most of the U.S., but under California law it is legal for people suffering from certain ailments to grow, smoke and possess marijuana upon a doctor's recommendation." |
