Re: Ocean Tower OTI/SPI- Ka-BOOM ??

There is quite a bit of attention to this "kersplosion" if you don't know about it, mainly private operators who intend to make some big bucks off the event - like it should be.

Many charter captains report full boats waiting, but the dates are not nailed down so they can't book real trips yet, bay or gulfside. Bummer.

Media like Channel 5 and the newspapers will be there.

Many privates such as SouthPadreLive will have several live cams and a video cam that costs about as much as your house, to sell the product or use it for advertising.

The blaster contractor even has "front row seats" to the event in a special area for local dignitaries.

Not sure if there are plans for viewing at South Flats or the Convention Center, which would be ideal - I haven't talked to Dan Quandt.

The town will be spending considerable funds on securing the area.

My list could go on and on, but Telegraph what exactly do you want the town to do that goes above and beyond that? I mean there is a notice on the town website.

What do you want, $200 city rebates if you book a room for the night of the event? The CVB to put about a $150,000 advertising tickler? I guess I don't understand what you want. Thanks for any clarification,

-Yote

What is needed is some creativity on the part of someone in charge who gets paid to promote the island.

Go back and look at posts 67, 69 which were in July, and then look at post 79 which was written in September. There is no evidence that any of these suggestions were followed up on.

Here we have what perhaps is an unprecedented event about to take place and yet there are those who say we should not take an opportunity to capitalize upon it? In case you didn't realize it, the island is really not doing too well from a business standpoint. Don't you think some Hollywood screenwriter could write something like this in a script?

I'm sorry but the status quo that we deal with here just isn't acceptable.

Well Telegraph, perhaps you don't have the depth of knowledge and history to know that there was hardly any business between Columbus Day and early March, when most of the businesses were shuttered. It wasn't until the early 1980s when you could say there was any winter trade here on the island. If you can't run your business based on profits made between March and August, you probably have no reason owning a business down here.

I will be the first to admit, however, that Winter Texans love the restaurants that have special "early bird" deals. This has indeed helped a few establishments weather the slow winters a lot better, financially.

But one day, such as the tower implosion, wouldn't amount to a pimple on a mountain as compared to a steady "carry trade" such as what the Winter Texans have achieved. If you had about two dozen major implosions, with fireworks and laser shows every Friday night, I am sure that economic stimulus would be hefty, indeed!

Too bad but you missed my point entirely. My experience with the island dates back 22 years and I understand the seasonality of the place quite well.

I don't understand the reference to winter Texans and "early bird" specials. It has nothing to do with what we are talking about here. Have you started to celebrate Thanksgiving a little early?

Yeah, that's the ticket. Maybe a remake of this classic:

I will start calling my contacts in the entertainment industry IMMEDIATELY.

Hello?!?! ... No one's answered my question. What's the scoop on National Geographic showing up with a film crew? Was this just another joke? Where's the proof?... Why would ya just throw that out there?

Did some bung-hole say that National Geographic was going to come down here for a story about a leaning tower implosion? Wow, such fertile (or perhaps should I say well fertilized) imaginations! Sorry, I missed that forum post. To answer your question, I have absolutely no clue, and tend to doubt it.

It looks from this article that the OTI demolition is going to be anything but ordinary.
They point out that this is more an experiment, than business as usual.
Ah hah, this should be interesting. J

Demolition date set for South Padre Island’s Ocean Tower
Controlled Demolition Inc. to bring down Ocean Tower on Dec. 13

CAMERON COUNTY, Texas — Dec. 9, 2009 — The demolition of Ocean Tower condominiums has been set for Sunday, Dec. 13. The demolition will occur as soon after 9 a.m. as preparations, security and weather conditions permit. Controlled Demolition Inc. (CDI) of Baltimore, Md., one of the nation’s premier demolition firms, has been contracted to demolish the tower through implosion with as little impact on the local community as possible.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience as we have worked with Cameron County and South Padre Island officials to determine a date that will allow us to have a safe demolition,” CDI President Mark Loizeaux said. “National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has been heavily involved in our decision-making process, providing information regarding the wind patterns and speeds. The entire demolition planning process has revolved around completing the implosion safely. Safety is our number one priority and will not be compromised.”
Because of South Padre Island’s weather conditions, Dec. 13 is a tentative date, and there is no guarantee the demolition will occur then. On Sunday morning, CDI and local safety organizations will evaluate the weather conditions and then determine whether the building can be safely brought down. If the weather requires the demolition to be rescheduled, it will be announced through the local media and on townspi.com.
To ensure people’s safety, CDI has asked regulatory agencies to establish an exclusion zone around the perimeter of Ocean Tower. Padre Boulevard will be closed north and south of the implosion area for an undetermined length of time before and after the event. In addition, the U.S. Coast Guard will patrol Laguna Madre and the Gulf of Mexico to ensure boaters remain a safe distance off shore and from the demolition site. Following the demolition, CDI and local safety agencies will evaluate the exclusion zone, and once the area has been deemed safe for the public, the streets and waterways will be opened.
Local residents with questions about the demolition process are encouraged to call Jeff Coyle at (210) 826-8899 or (210) 535-9015.

Re: Ocean Tower OTI/SPI- Ka-BOOM ??

I am hopeful someone from the town can provide an answer to a question. On Sunday morning prior to and after the demolition, we need to know where the road will be blocked on Padre Blvd. Specifically will Padre Blvd be open northbound to Sunset?

We have out of town investors who will be here to review real estate and they have a very limited amount of time to look. We have tried asking other sources about this and we simply cannot get an answer.

Thanks

The road is fine and the beach is great and we saw no collateral damage from the blast.

Here is a view of just the blast and a tour of debris pile
